Arthur "Lester" Cassels

Arthur L. “Lester” Cassels, 92, of Peru passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Saturday, January 28, 2023 at Duke’s Memorial Hospital in Peru.

He was born September 24, 1930 in Cairo, Georgia to the late Guy E. Cassels and Mary Ethel (Gwaltney) Cassels. He was married to Mabel Tackett for 37 years. She preceded him in death in February 2001. He married Geneva “June” Combs in June 2011 and she preceded him in death in March 2021.

Lester was a mechanic and along with his wife Mabel owned Cassels Garage in West Melbourne, Florida. He was a member of the United States Army and served in Germany during the Korean War. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and building boats. He attended Wabash Friends Church.

He is survived by his children: Rebecca Dawn (Dean Wilson), Valerie Williams, Cindy (Joe) Winter, Mark (Linda) Cassels, Howard (Bobbie) Fulton, Debbie (Brooke) Balsbaugh and Jeff (Lanette) Combs; brother, Gene (Annell) Cassels, sister, Peggy Guber; grandchildren: Rocky (Tianna) Fraser, Dustin (Sara) Fraser, Taylor Wilson, Valerie (Greg) Lukin, Neil Williams, Craig (Pam) Williams, Doug Williams, Travis (Jessica) Williams, April (David) Ellis, Amelia Winter M.D (Christopher Rullan), Jenna Winter, Jessica (Jeremiah) Wilber, Katie Fulton, Judson (Peter) Cassels and Julie Cassels, Aaron (Lorie) Thomas, Amanda Thomas, Claire (Joshua) Kellems, Colin (Jennifer) Balsbaugh, Eric (Valerie) Combs, Erin Wagner, Tyler (Kelly) Combs, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and special niece, Jerri Bunker.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Mabel and second wife June, daughter and son-in-law Elaine and Rev. James Thomas, son-in-law James Williams, and brothers: David “Carson”Cassels, James “JW” Cassels and Edwin Cassels.

Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. with service at 3 pm on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at Riverview Funeral Home, 421 West Canal Street, Peru, IN. The service will be officiated by Lester’s grandson, Pastor Tyler Combs. Memorial contributions can be made to Wabash Friends Church 3563 S State Road 13 Wabash, IN 46992 or to  Arthritis Foundation, on-line at https://www.arthritis.org/honor-memorial-form or by mail to: 1355 Peachtree St. NE Suite 600, Atlanta, GA 30309.
